This AHL designed project in Kahului serves as both the main office for the Local Union 1186 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), as well as the training center for aspiring electricians on Maui. A ground-up construction, the building is split into two main sections; the lower roof area contains the union offices / meeting spaces and the warehouse accommodates the training workshops. Due to large membership meetings that frequently take place at the facility, the owner tasked AHL to design an indoor / outdoor space that can accommodate these large functions. In response to this request, a large cantilevered roof has been designed above the main warehouse roll-up doors. A large mezzanine space is also incorporated into the design, which overlooks the warehouse space, allowing for storage and future workshop expansion. The Union, which was moving to a more global vision, wanted to create an environment that communicated clear concepts and ideals.
