AHL designed the Hawai‘i Nature Center (HNC) Rain Pavilion through its 1% Solution program focused on providing pro bono services to non-profit organizations. Located at the main educational facility of the HNC, the structure promotes a brighter future for the environmental education of children and the community. The design concept of the Pavilion integrates the traditional open Hawaiian “A-frame” structure with a raised roof that brings across natural daylight and ventilation. Translucent roof panels are featured to provide a visual connection to the surrounding forest. Translucent leaf-shaped plaques are also highlighted, in between raw wood columns, to honor the various donors who made this project possible.
