Known as Hale Pawa‘a, meaning “canoe enclosure” in Hawaiian, is a medical center that houses several innovative features including a stone veneer wall and a custom canopy designed after a canoe outrigger. A stronger and more cost-effective “Smart Beam” framing system is used to offer flexibility in adding or rerouting mechanical systems through modified steel beams. Window systems for the office building were also carefully designed for aesthetics, energy efficiency, maintainability, and daylighting.
