Ala Moana Center, a landmark and one of the largest retail destinations on Oʻahu, serves as a dynamic gathering place where culture, community, and commerce converge. The project reimagines five restrooms across the mall, weaving Hawaiian heritage and natural beauty into the design to create spaces that are both functional and inspiring.

Drawing inspiration from the Center's vibrant setting and Hawaiian culture, three distinct themes were crafted for the restrooms: Royal Luxury, Pop Tropic, and Makai. Royal Luxury honors the traditions of Hawaiian Ali‘i, reimagining the elegance of feather capes and flower leis through textural patterns, subdued tones, and natural materiality. Pop Tropic energizes its spaces with bold, mural-like graphics and playful designs that reflect Hawai‘i's nostalgic surf culture and urban vibrancy. Meanwhile, Makai, meaning “toward the sea,” draws from the Kālia region's historical connection between land and ocean, using tonal blues, fluid patterns, and surfboard-inspired signage to celebrate the spirit of Hawai‘i's waters.

Our Experiential Graphic Design team, in collaboration with local artists, created custom graphics and dimensional signage that integrate art, space, and messaging to enrich the visual storytelling and transform the restrooms into immersive environments. Kim Sielbeck’s lively murals transformed the Hoʻokipa Terrace restrooms into colorful, energetic spaces, while Lora Gallagher’s opihi and puakenikeni motifs added cultural depth and elegance to the luxury restrooms near Aritzia.

Swinerton managed the overall project coordination, while T&T ensured seamless installation of modern plumbing fixtures like trough sinks and Dyson faucets. HONBLUE played a key role in bringing everything to life by fabricating and installing 3M vinyl, laminates, and routed birch plywood panels. These materials were carefully chosen for their durability and aesthetic appeal, transforming the restrooms into visually striking spaces that withstand the demands of a bustling retail center. Through these thoughtful collaborations, the refreshed restrooms reflect Ala Moana Center’s unique identity and connection to the community.
