(Honolulu, Hawaii, Oct. 30, 2013) Architects Hawaii Ltd., one of the state’s largest architecture firms, said its project, the 152,000-square-foot FBI building in West Oahu, recently won LEED Gold certification from the Green Building Certification Institute.
The Honolulu-based large architecture firm worked with the project developer, Penrose/Walsh FBI Honolulu LLC, and the FBI to incorporate a variety of green strategies, including the installation of a solar photovoltaic system and the implementation of energy efficiency measures.
The energy from the PV panels provide about 20 percent of the building’s typical power demand. Other green efforts included improving storm water management and adding water-efficient landscaping.
“The project owner and the FBI challenged us to deliver a state-of-the-art high-performance facility,” Architects Hawaii’s David Bylund said in a statement. “Achieving LEED Gold certification was a large part of that challenge, [but] the benefits include great reduction in energy and water use compared to a standard office building, and a very healthy work environment for the FBI agents and staff.”
The FBI offices, which were previously located on two floors in the Downtown Honolulu federal building, are now located in the new four-story building in Kalaeloa that was previously part of Barbers Point Naval Air Station.
