Towers of Kuhio Park

Design to create a stronger sense of community.

As Hawai‘i’s largest public housing, The Towers of Kuhio Park were renovated with a transformation plan that not only addressed the needs of its residents  but also the needs of the community. Originally built in 1965, the existing conditions at The Towers represented years of deferred maintenance due to inadequate funding. The renovation of The Towers marked the first public-private partnership between a private developer and the State of Hawai‘i to transform public housing. From new paint finishes to introducing new amenities, sustainable elements, and ADA accessible features, both exterior and interior design changes were made to enhance the quality of life for its residents and visitors. A noteworthy element of the project included its relocation plan that created an in-house “hotel” for residents to stay in while their apartments were being renovated.
