The design of the NEXCOM Car Care Center was heavily inspired by the basalt hafted adze tools used by Hawaiians to cut trees, shape canoes, and carve idols and bowls. Comparing today's car mechanics to ancient canoe carvers, the design team paid homage to past artisans by using concrete basalt-clad masonry units at the base of the building for durability and protection against vehicular impact. The new Car Care Center provides NAVFAC Hawai‘i with 24 service bays, tire storage, retail/customer service, a waiting area, administration spaces, and ancillary employee support spaces.
